Sarah’s story: confidentiality and safety essential
Sarah* is a 52-year-old woman who had been living in an outer village of the Southern Highlands. She first contacted Pop In after seeing interviews and launch materials in the local newspaper and online in early May 2021. At the time, she was couch-surfing with a number of friends, as she was no longer able to reside in the family home due to ongoing physical and emotional abuse.
Sarah made contact with a Pop In but was initially not prepared to visit our premises in person, fearful that she might be seen. One of Pop In’s caseworkers arranged to meet Sarah in a local park and was able to provide some initial support regarding her safety and immediate shelter needs.
An ongoing relationship
Over the following three weeks, Sarah and her dedicated caseworker continued to meet, until Sarah finally agreed to come to Pop In, where she was able to talk in a confidential and safe space and - most importantly - have access to the full suite of services and supports that we offer.
Help through lockdown
When Covid lockdown hit, Sarah, with assistance from Pop In, had accessed short-term housing through a local community member who had a small holiday rental property they were unable to lease. Her caseworker ensured she had access to the internet, including providing a reconditioned laptop so she could maintain connection and support with her mental health, financial counselling, legal services and, importantly, family and community needs.
Throughout this period, the Pop In caseworker worked alongside Sarah to provide information, advice and service access as needed.
Continuing to walk with Sarah
With the ending of lockdown, Sarah is once engaging with Pop In face-to-face. She has been able to maintain contact with all the service providers she needs, has current rental references and is continuing to work with Pop In to regain her independence and her place in the community.
